How hard can it be?

I’ve had the opportunity to ride shotgun with an energetic healthcare entrepreneur for well over half of my professional career. During this time, Nathanial Findlay and I have strived to make healthcare more accessible to patients and easier to deliver for practitioners. My focus on the technology side of the journey has taken me from large hospital systems to primary care practices to virtual chronic care management, and now to aging in place. When I step back and look at how my career has evolved, I realize what I’m most passionate about is helping improve the lives of patients and instilling confidence in their loved ones that their parents are being treated and cared for in the best possible way. My career has followed a path from institutional brick-and-mortar to the local primary care physician’s office to the Internet. Now, it has culminated in the home, where folks most want to receive care. This is where we find Lifeguard, providing tech-enabled quality in-home care.

Expanding Physician Engagement Between Visits

Nat walked into my office in late 2014, waving a paper in his hand and exclaiming, “This is our next opportunity: Code 99490!” He was referring to the base Chronic Care Management code, created to reimburse physicians for the extra time it takes to coordinate care for Medicare patients with two or more chronic conditions. However, there was one important aspect that made 99490 different; services could be provided on “an incident to” basis, meaning that we could build a team of virtual nurses to provide care from afar. With this knowledge, we grew our remote staff quickly to fill the void between in-person visits. In a matter of months, we evolved from burner phones and Excel spreadsheets to a sophisticated VOIP system and a technology platform we called the Wellbox Operating System.

We design and develop innovative healthcare technology

I have been fortunate enough to wear many hats at Myca, from the product manager who helped launch our EHR in Brooklyn, to business development, to sales and marketing, and now operations. Regardless of my role, I have always been surrounded by top-notch teams who shared the goal of improving the patient/physician experience. Myca is our launching pad and the technology backbone of several international installations, including in the United States, the Middle East, and Australia. The Hello Health, Wellbox, Santé Sans Fils, and Lifeguard brands are all powered by the Myca Platform.

Electronic health revenue

When Electronic Health Record companies were focusing on the payment cycle for physicians, Hello Health shone the spotlight on the patient-provider relationship. From the beginning, we wanted to improve the communication between patients and the people taking care of them. This was the driving force behind Hello Health. With a full-featured patient portal, we made Hello Health the first EHR with an integrated telemedicine tool and HIPAA-compliant secure messaging in the U.S. market. Oh yeah, and we also made doctors money.

Groundbreaking telehealth

Health without waiting lines? Enter Santé Sans File, which can be translated to “health without the wait” or “wireless health”. In fact, it was both. We really broke new ground here in the province of Québec when we launched this beta test before “Internet medicine” was even on the radar of lawmakers. Fun times to say the least. It was the launch of Santé Sans File that drove us to the U.S., a market that was looking for innovation.

Innovation at the point-of-care

Brought on by Nat to define the clinical role of a hospital-based bedside computer called the Pyxis PatientStation, I was given free rein to explore the technology market, work with nurses and pharmacists in the field, and ultimately design and develop a point-of-care nursing documentation tool. I would go on to manage Cardinal’s newly acquired flagship product from CareFusion, MedAdmin, which incorporated 5-rights checking and barcode scanning at the point-of-care.
